A Midsummer Night's Dream is a play that is written by William Shakespeare, one of the most dominant figures in the English literature. It was originally printed in 1600.
The events of the play take place in Athens, Greece. The main characters are Duke Theseus of Athens, his captured Amazonian woman Hippolyta and the lovers Demetrius, Helena, Lysander and Hermia.
The play is still popular today. It is performed worldwide amongst theaters and there are also films completely based on the plot of it.
Plot[]
The play starts by Egeus complaining about his daughter, Hermia to the Duke, who insists not to marry Demetrius despite her father instructs to do so. While the Duke initially cannot make a decision, he soon takes the side of Egeus and tells Hermia that if she does not obey her father, she will be eternally condemned from men by being left to pilgrimage. As a result, Hermia's real love, Lysander tells her to together escape from Athens to his aunt's house in the woods (which is not very far from Athens). Meanwhile, Demetrius also tries to gain the love of Hermia and for this, he even opposes Lysander. However, he finds Helena's love instead, a girl that he dislikes. In the second scene of this first act, Bottom and his group of amateur actors talk about how they are going to rehearse for the play they will act before the Duke. The play they rehearse is about Pyramus and Thisby, two lovers that are never able to find each other. When the rehearsal is finished and the roles are distributed to the actors, the group decides to meet and do their next rehearsal the following day.
At the beginning of Act II, Robin Goodfellow (a.k.a. Puck) makes his first appearance as a fairy. He is so well-known that even an ordinary fairy knowns that he always disturbs the villagers by making jokes to them. Then the fairy exits the scene when she sees that Oberon, the King of the Elves and Titania, the Queen of the Elves's coming. Oberon wants to take an Indian boy from Titania, but Titania does not accept it and says that he is not her Lord and he is just jealous of her. Even though Oberon tries his best to persuade her, he fails and Titania goes her way and she really exits the scene. As Oberon continues to complain about his situation, Puck comes near to him. Oberon tells Puck that there is a juice of a flower which he can drop onto Titania's eyes and make her fall in love with him again (and also giving the Indian boy). While he says these, he sees Demetrius and Helena coming to them. Both Oberon and Puck become invisible and overhear what the two Athenians say to each other. Helena tries to persuade Demetrius to love her, but Demetrius stubbornly insists not to do so and says that if she continues following him, he will do him mischief. When Oberon hears these (as Demetrius and Helena exit the scene), he decides to drop the juice onto Demetrius' eyes too, which will make him love Helena. However, most presumably due to him being a King, he tells Puck to do these. Puck accepts his King's commands without reluctance and he exits the scene.
In the following acts, even though the relationships between them are initially broken due to the accidents of Puck, the lovers Hermia and Lysander, and Helena and Demetrius find and love each other. Then, the Duke finds them in the woods and takes them to his palace to celebrate the two marriages at the same time. Before that, though, Bottom and his group come and perform before the Duke. As the Duke and the others (including Hippolyta) voice their opinions about the play, the group continues performing without any regard (despite they have many oddities, such as making inanimate objects like wall and the Moon be played by an actor and speak). Finally, the performance ends and the humans exit the scene, as the Fairies Puck, Oberon and Titania enter the palace and give their good wishes for the ceremony.

A peek into the content of this play by analyzing three of its quotes[]
Shakespeare is such a successful playwright that most of the quotes in this play too have a literary and deep meaning. In this analyzation, three of these quotes will be analyzed.
Quote 1:
"...The course of true love never did run smooth..."
(Lysander to Hermia, Act I)
When Hermia has a pale face, her love, Lysander is worried about it. Even though Hermia does not directly tell Lysander that she will be punished for not marrying Demetrius, Lysander is smart enough to understand it and he says to Hermia this quote. In the quote, Lysander wants to tell Hermia that their true love against each other can never be conducted without a problem. I believe that this is an important quote, because it is also Shakespeare's way of fitting a very precise explanation of the plot of this play into the very first act of it.
Quote 2:
"The wildest hath not such a heart as you..."
Helena says this quote to Demetrius when he shows most of his hatred against Helena by telling her that he will leave her in the woods. From the quote, it can be understood that Helena seems to have lost all of her hope in Demetrius as a lover for her. I find this quote important, because it does not only reflect how angry Helena is against the stubbornness of Demetrius but also how her belief of making Demetrius love her decreases drastically from Act I to Act II. This belief (or hope, if it is assumed that Helena is also desperate) decreases so much that Helena can now compare Demetrius' heart with that of the wildest animal.
Quote 3:
"What, can you do me greater harm than hate?"
In Act III, Lysander is under the effect of the juice, so that he loves Helena instead of Hermia and he tells Hermia, his true love that he hates her, but he will not harm her. As Hermia does not know that Lysander is charmed, she thinks that he has said this deliberately and she gets very sad, resulting in her saying this quote. I find this quote too very important, because it shows that Hermia loves Lysander so much that she cannot stand even the mental opposition of this fact by her love.
